I can't see how opponent familiarity has anything to do with it.

Quality of opponent? Yes. but familiarity? No.

Throw in increased ticket prices last year for a good home slate (Texas, Utah, Boise, etc) and prices that didn't come down for a much worse slate this year (Savannah St, UNLV, Nevada) and you have another reason why attendance is down.
