How many road games a team plays should be a part of the playoff consideration
And this is a topic that you never hear ESPN discuss... NEVER. But just think about it. Not having to play an extra few road games does make a big difference. First off, that's two road trips you don't have to take meaning you have a lot more time to do other things with the time you would have spent traveling and preparing to travel. Secondly, obviously it's beneficial to play games at home. Supposedly, playing at home only provides you the benefit of 3 or 4 points but I have a hard time believing this. I think it's anywhere from 3 to 4 points to 14 points depending on the team and situation. You also have to take into consideration how far you are traveling. Are you hopping on a bus for a two-hour ride or are you traveling 2 or 3 time zones away? The final part of the equation is who are you playing in these two extra home games? Generally, the answer is not a very good team - either a bottom of the barrel FBS or an FCS team (or lower). In essence, it's basically a bye week where you can rest your starters and spend more time game planning for your next big game. The only P5 conference that truly does not do this (at least not as often) is the Pac 12.
