I had an interesting conversation last week with a former college coach
This guy spent 40+ years playing and coaching football from High School to college to a few years professionally... I say this because this guy knows football on a level I've never gotten remotely close to. He blows my mind with concepts I've never even thought of but make so much sense when he discusses it.

We talked about several football related things but the one that stood out was when he said "if you have 1 on 1 coverage, there is no such thing as the receiver not being open... he may not always have ideal seperation but seperation and being open are two different things".

He went on to explain that in any college offensive scheme there are designed ways to obtain the objective of getting the ball into the receivers hands thus allowing the offense to advance the football and accomplish the ultimate goal... Scoring. He said when a receiver is covered he should maintain positioning that provides the necessary leverage that when the ball is placed properly by the QB there exists a high probability of the "playmaker" being able to make the play.

Since he pointed that out I've watched a few games (college/pro) where QB's have routinely thrown "into coverage" but in places the receiver has a chance to make a play on it. It's like MJ said... "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take".

He mentioned Taysom's greatest weakness at this level is he's too good of an athlete and has trained himself to not remain patient and confident in his throws. I believe we've all seen this. Taysom's running is so effective and he is so often bigger, faster, stronger than the opponents that it quickly becomes the default. Meanwhile less athletic QB's have the luxury of lesser athleticism which almost forces them to rely more heavily on their arm creating a more pass friendly environment.

I think Taysom makes continued strides game by game this year and next to become a more pure pass minded QB. He's not there consistently, yet but after this conversation I believe he can be.

I'm looking for BYU's offense to open up and let the ball fly more. Once it does, this will be a very fun offense to witness.
