I think initially it was something that Nike saw as a way to try and get more
recruits interested in playing football up in Eugene, Oregon. Nike, Oregon, and Nike's advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy (one of the best creative firms in the world) have definitely put a lot of money and brainpower behind differentiating that program and I think it has bled into the rest of college football.

Another reason Nike made the Pro Combat stuff was to try and fend off Under Armour, who was the new kid on the block trying to steal Nike's cool factor.
