Our "bend but don't break" philosophy on defense is out-of-balance
right now. We aren't quite able to mount a strong enough pass rush, nor are we able to provide tight enough coverage to make up for the lack of pass rush. So, teams are able to march up and down the field by throwing mostly underneath-type routes. Even Texas was able to do so. The difference with Virginia is that they were able to finish off more drives than Houston, Texas, and UConn. Our offense was up to the challenge of putting up enough points to overcome, but Virginia was able to rack up a lot of yards and eat a lot of clock. We're either going to have to figure out a way to get to the QB, or we're going to have to cover better. Our guys did a very good job of protecting against really big plays over the top, but every other aspect of the opponent's passing game was clicking. That's gotta stop. I'm very sure our coaches understand far better than I do, and I'm sure they'll make adjustments. It will help to get Bronson back, and it will help as the season goes along as our younger star-potential pass rushers (Hinds, Warner) gain more experience.
