4 games in and there are three primary areas for improvement with this BYU team
1. Penalties - BYU is the most penalized team in the NCAA. 44 penalties for nearly 450 yards. That's insane. The real issue I have with our penalties isn't necessarily THAT they're happening, it's more WHEN they're happening. Lack of focus, lack of discipline, lack of being prepared? I'm not sure, but something needs to change, or our sloppy penalties are going to cost us a game this year. We need to see our penalty per game numbers drop from 11-12 to 4 or 5.

2. Mistakes - I had a hard time coming up with a one word summary for what I'm trying to verbalize, but I think "mistakes" sums it up. This includes, but is not limited to the aforementioned penalty issue, undisciplined mistakes and errors, and lack of assignment sound football. We need to stop taunting the opposing team after big stops. This team isn't good enough, yet, to stand over someone after a hit, do a stupid touchdown dance, or some other form of poor sportsmanship after a big play. This team needs to focus on assignment sound football and execution. Not running out of bounds at crucial time management downs, trying to jump a route instead of just playing sound man to man defense, and not keeping teams alive during drives by making critical, stupid, unnecessary penalties.

3. The Kicking Game - Unfortunately there's not a lot we can do about this one. Our kickers are who they are. We're just going to have to get used to our kickers not being able to kick the ball into the end zone, and we'd better pray we don't need to kick a field goal beyond 40 yards this year to win a game because, plain and simple, it ain't gonna happen.

BYU needs to focus on these three areas during this bye week. This is a good team, not a great team. It has the players and path to go undefeated, but I'm afraid if they can't address these three issues, they're going to drop a game before the regular season is finished. My monies on Boise State, UCF, or Cal. On the flip side, if they can get a handle on a few of these issues this team will be undefeated at the end of the season.
