We didn't rank BYU. It's the people who do college football as a profession.
We didn't make Hill a Heisman candidate, it's the media that covers college football that has latched on to his sometimes otherworldly plays and decided that he is a legit prospect at this point. What we think is irrelevant.

It's the same point I made reference whether we "deserved" to be National Champions. The answer is of course, yes...because by the procedures in place in 1984, BYU was selected by both the Associated Press Writers and the UPI Coaches. The debate ends there. We deserved because the people with votes voted. They were all that counts.

Likewise we are rated 20 because the people that vote have voted. We are what they say we are. Perhaps better, perhaps worse, but we deserve to be ranked 20 by the AP because that's where we fall. A little more meaningless in today's landscape, but they still put the number next to the school's name and it still carries some prestige.

If Hill continues as he has so far, he will get to New York and he will get to New York not because we think he should, but because Heisman voters think he should. They are what counts. Clearly he merits the attention at this point because he's done some remarkable things. Those are the kind of things that often win Heisman trophies...if done consistently. Detmer won the trophy against Miami by leaving future NFL lineman floundering in space while shredding them. After that, he just had to hang around and not choke. Thankfully...they awarded the trophy before Hawaii...but those were the rules. He deserved it...because the voters that count made it so.

It is what it is.
