Ranking Bias will be nearly impossible to overcome this year for BYU
There are two biases that BYU is going to have tough time overcoming even if we run the table.

1. Preseason Bias - So much of the rank position in the polls at the start of the season is determined by totally subjective factors that have nothing to do with the actual game on the field. Things like "returning starters" or "last season's record" or simply "tradition" determine the rankings at the start of every season. Since it's not often teams jump another in the polls when both win, it's clear that where you start before you even play a game is important to where you finish if you win 10+ games. All we can control is winning, but it may not be enough because we didn't get any pre-season love from the pollsters. If they waited 3-4 weeks into the season before doing the first rankings this could be largely eliminated.

2. P5 Bias - The power conferences have succeeded in creating the perception that membership in a P5 conference creates superiority over all non-P5 programs regardless of what happens on the field. Case in point - UCLA played Texas and Virginia just like BYU and didn't win either game in nearly as convincing fashion yet they are still ranked 9 spots higher than BYU. The results on the field simply don't justify any higher ranking for UCLA than BYU, so it comes down to getting the benefit of the bias from both preseason (they were ranked in every pre-season poll) and the ever-strengthening P5 bias.

I'm personally thrilled that we're even in the national college football discussion, but worried that not even winning will help us break the glass ceiling that exists in the upper echelons of college football. Sure hope we get a chance to test my theory. Just Win Baby!
