Ultimately, the only thing that matters is the score
so points allowed has to be the most important stat. However, given than the offense can indirectly (and sometimes directly) help the opposing team due to turnovers and/or poor field position, looking at stats such as yards per rush and pass efficiency defense can help as well. Another stat I've heard of as well that would be a good stat to look at is points per drive.
