something i re-learned about sports fans after uva-byu game
Immediately after the game I spoke with a nice middle-age couple from C-Ville about the game. The conversation was very pleasant except at the end the man slipped in a little comment about the refs. I found that odd because he seemed so reasonable until then and how could he possibly believe the refs hurt UVA based on what I had seen with my own eyes?

Then I spent some time on UVA's main board and sure enough, they were going on and on about the refs. Of course, this goes on after every game with every teams' fans but these guys were very specific and I went back and looked at the video and sure enough they were right about some of the calls.

Then, BYU's DC comes out two days ago and says that all those PI calls against BYU (you know, the ones we were all booing about) were legitimate calls.

So here's my point: I saw a game that looked like the ACC refs were favoring UVA with various calls. UVA fans saw something different. Is it possible that we all see what we want to see during these games with respect to officiating and in reality it is rare that an officiating crew actually favors one of the teams? They may be incompetent and jip both teams but is it likely they are favoring one team over another even if our perception is such?

I've had my wife and daughter swear that my daughter's soccer refs were out to get them and I always question the motive for such. Much more likely that refs make mistakes, period.
