It's actually a very delicate balance between cash and competition.

If it was all about cash everyone would be fighting for a team from Texas (PAC12 and B1G). The deal with the PAC and B1G really fell through because of the competition issues it would create. All those big name programs having to share 1 playoff spot. Not going to happen. That's why we probably won't see 16 team leagues.
