#21 BYU vs. Virginia Film Breakdown
P.S. Sorry about the audio on some of the videos, iMovie wouldn't upload 3 of my edits from the computer, working on removing the audio but if you can still hear it let me know.

1st Q:

Virginia comes out and runs their own verison of the option. When running the option, the tackle blocks down leaving the man on the end to make the decision to pursue the RB or the QB. The tackle's was made much easier because of Peck shifting from the C-gap to the B-gap right before the ball was snapped. Alisa's job on this is to contain the QB and force the RB back inside to the meat of our defense. He takes a poor angle and misses an easy, backfield tackle on Lambert. Stout also failed to wrap up which allowed Greyson to get free and get downfield.

Lasike starts out on the right of Taysom with two receivers on either side. It's a simple out route by the inside receiver, and a go route by guys on the outside. Before the play, the Safety rotated to Juergens which put him in better position to get to his deep third. Taysom kept his eyes on the right side of the field before he was sacked if he would have looked left he would have seen that the pass could be completed to Juergens in the flat, or Mathews over the top.

This was the perfect play call for the soft coverage that the DB was playing on Leslie. The backs duty is to cover the deep third of the field and Leslie runs a hook route giving him some space to make a play and get up field.

2nd Q:

BYU runs play action out of split backs with two receivers to the right. This was a great fake out forcing the MLB to to complete bite on the run, while the S and WLB both take a few steps up opening up Blackmon's slant route. The CB also didn't rotate to his deep third which only helped Blackmon get even more open.

Mahina is on the line in a three-point stance and Leslie is tight in a flanker/wing position. The DB is lined straight up on Mahina, so when Mahina runs his in route, the DB has to float back with him through the zone and it opens up the quick slant for Leslie to score the TD.

Daniel is giving a soft cushion to the receiver, his job on this play is to cover the deep third of the field and he does a great job of that and reading the ball to get the INT. Also, Dallin Leavitt comes in hard on the blitz and forces the errant throw by Greyson Lambert.

3rd Q:

Taysom scores on a read option. BYU comes out with split backs, two wide outs, and a slot out right. On the option, the tackle blocks down leaving the DE or OLB unblocked with the option to tackle the RB or the QB, the QB makes the read to either give or keep the ball. This was actually a well played read by Valles by making Taysom think that he was committing to Jamaal but recovered and almost had Taysom but Taysom powered through to the TD.

Taysom is sacked by Max Valles. He started in the loaded pistol formation with a receiver on each side. Play action is ran and the three backs help in pass coverage. Lasike starts on the right and works his way up to the second level, the problem here is that his first job is to chip the guy rushing off the edge (Valles) and pick up the inside blitz but he didn't do much of a chip. Hine was on Taysom's right and was flat footed by not chopping his feet and was unable to pick up the edge rush resulting in a sack.

4th Q:

BYU comes out with one back and split receivers on both sides. It's a mirrored pattern with a crossing route in the middle and an out route on either side, since Apo is on the short side of the field he runs a deeper out route. As the play develops, it becomes a scramble situation, the receivers job is to get upfield if they are running a shallow route and come back towards the QB if they are upfield and Juergens executes well in this making himself wide open for a TD.

The middle opened up big time for Hine, 91 and 2 played as the two safeties for the kickoff team, their job is to not let anyone get pas them. The "lonely petunia in the onion patch" did the job for himself by being flat-footed while trying to make the tackle, the key play in the return goes to Lasike who had a huge block on number 2 who was the only one who had a realistic chance to get Hine.
