I believe Whittingham has 2 seasons on his contract. For recruiting purposes, I don't think they want Whittingham to go into the next season with only the one year remaining so after this year they either need to give him a contract extension or move on to someone else. If he doesn't make a bowl game, or even scrapes into one with 6 wins, I don't know how the AD justifies giving him an extension.
