When I set it up is interesting. However this printer doesn't have a display of any sort but this gives me some ideas to go on...

Have you checked the subnet/gateway of the printer?

I'm betting this is it. When you connect to the VPN, you join the same subnet

Was the printer set up with a hostname or an IP?

I've seen something like this before where ranges of IPs are reserved for VPN...
