Two of my favorite memories from being a BYU fan involve USU
Growing up in Idaho, I used to climb up onto the roof of my Dad's barn with my transistor radio in order to listen to Paul James call Cougar games. I had attended one game in Provo in 1971, but for the most part I listened on the radio. In 1985, the YM President in the ward arranged for the Priests to attend a BYU game in person. I was on cloud 9 when I found out we were going and I looked forward to that game all Summer long.

President Kimball had died earlier that week and the game was held on the day of his funeral. We listened to some of the funeral proceedings on the radio as we made the drive to Logan. It felt a little odd for us to be enjoying ourselves at a game. However, during the pre-game show, Coach Edwards was quoted as saying that, President Kimball would surely want us to go on with living our lives, so...we did. The game was played in a driving snowstorm, BYU won 44-0, and although we nearly froze at times, we all had a fantastic time. It was a great day all around.

Four years later, in 1989, I returned to Logan as BYU played USU again. This time I went as Cosmo and had a wonderful time watching the Cougars get another blowout win. The reason this game was so memorable to me was that 3 weeks earlier, against Washington State, the WSU Cougar and I had "kidnapped" a picollo player from the Cougar band and caused quite a stir with the band director and some of the Cougar Club leadership. I had apologized profusely in person, had written a letter stating how much I regretted my actions, and promised it would not happen again. I thought everything had been forgiven, but clearly I was wrong.

During the game in Logan, I went up to the Band Director, and offered my hand in friendship. Rather than take my hand, he leaned over, whispered something in my ear, and turned away. I was disappointed, but I gave up trying to gain forgiveness and decided to forget about it and went right back to having fun. During the rest of the game, I was doing what I normally did as Cosmo - dancing and acting a bit foolish. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, the game ended, and we made the drive back to Provo.

Everything seemed normal until later that week when I got a call from the President's office with an "invitation" to meet with President Rex E. Lee regarding an incident at the game in Logan. I was starting to get worried as this was only the 4th game of the year and was the second time I had "gotten into trouble".

What had happened was that some student at the game had taken offense at some of my dance moves and had written a letter to the editor about it. The letter was quite humorous - it referred to my dancing and said I had been doing "hip gyrations that would make Madonna blush". He also wrote that he noticed Cosmo was getting all the girls with his dance moves and was wondering whether it might work for him. (Obviously, I never got all the girls, nor did I really want them)

Anyway...I nervously went to meet with President Lee, but quickly learned I had absolutely no reason to be worried. He was so cool about the entire thing, we had a good laugh, and the whole incident was forgotten. I've often wondered whatever happened to the kid that wrote that letter. Maybe it's one of you?
