The refs in the USC-Arizona game last night blew two blatant PI calls that I can remember in the first half. Seems to happen a lot, and this one for BYU was just extra frustrating for you given your being a fan and the clock striking zero.
It was certainly a missed call. Which is unfortunate. Has anyone here reffed high school or college football? I haven't even played. Is PI especially difficult to decipher? I have reffed a lot of basketball, and for me the hardest call to decipher was offensive charging. Is PI similar? I can imagine that depending on where the ref is standing, whether the ball is shielded from his view by the receiver/db, how fast the ball is delivered, etc all can make it a difficult call.
I assume this ref regrets the mistake. And I don't think missing this call necessarily means he's a bad ref.
Edit: I am a Utah fan. Full disclosure.
