Bronco is, by most objective measures, a good coach. But he's not great.
In fact, there is a credible argument that Bronco has disgressed since 2009 (after Crowton's recruits exited) and now may only be a decent head coach who makes more than his fair share of blunders. (as a side note, he's almost certainly a great defensive coordinator)

That's the rub, though. I think most here would say that BYU deserves, at this point, a GREAT head coach. Someone who can take us to the next level. Not just a decent-to-good coach. Or, alternatively, Bronco has--regardless of his abilities--become somewhat complacent here and we need new blood in the program.

Most of the Bronco supporters, on the other hand I think, would say that Bronco is such a terrific fit for BYU's unique culture and is a good enough (70% win percentage) coach that he deserves to stay. They also fear that BYU can't get anyone better (look at Nebraska and Michigan, right?).

That's what much of this debate boils down to, IMO.

For me, I think we need someone who can take us to the next level, which is not something I believe Bronco can do (even though he's done amazing things for the program post-Crowton). Still, barring a complete meltdown and losing seasons 2014-16, he probably deserves to ride out his contract (and I don't think BYU can afford to buy him out while hiring a replacement). Unless he turns everything around, his contract should not be renewed after 2016. He's welcome to stay as DC, though. Oh, and dump Howell yesterday.
