Even if BYU isn't winning or having big years they are a perfect fit for ESPN
for the Thursday and Friday night time slots. There are and will be enough BYU alum, fans, and LDS scattered across the country to keep tuning in to make it worthwhile. Heck, there are even tons of people that hate BYU that watch to cheer against them. BYU is getting eyeballs one way or another. On top of that BYU is one of the only teams in a situation where they can and will accept those Thursday, Friday, late night Saturday games on a regular basis. It really is a good situation for ESPN. If they were to end the contract with BYU who or what would they replace them with? I don't see ESPN having any better consistent options. I think the relationship/contract goes as long as BYU needs or wants it as long as BYU doesn't slip and go winless for 2-3 years in a row.
