Howell's play calling is not the issue.
It's the way he failed to prepare the defense, and a lot of this falls on Bronco as well. I think Bronco knows he screwed up by letting go completely and he's trying to correct it (mid-season with a slew of injuries). The players are just not as sharp when it comes to being prepared. Bronson has gotten beat on the edge like 34 times leading to HUGE, game-changing plays. Rob Daniel usually plays great until he decides to try for an interception and then shows that he has no idea what he's doing. The middle linebackers are not closing nearly fast enough before running backs get to the second level. All of these things reflect poorly prepared players. Part of it is due to injury (like Bronson being injured and hardly getting any reps during camp at his new position or Stout not playing enough during camp after being away from live-action D1 football for a while). But you have to do the best with what you got, and I'm not sure that's getting done on the player or coaching sides of the equation. Pikula, for example, has experience and should be playing much better. I'm not sure what his excuse is (or what the coaches' excuses are for him not playing well).
