Sure, the team thinks, the starting pitcher had a few jitters and gave up a few runs in the first. We've come back from that before, and he's making his pitches now. Two shut out innings. All we need is for the offense to catch a break or two and make some things happen.
Then they've got a man on. Then they've got a DOUBLE, giving them TWO runners in scoring position with no outs and an empty base so the Giants can't even double anybody up to limit the damage. No way they don't score at LEAST those two, right???
Aaaaaaaand then Madison Bumgarner happened. Two strikeouts, a walk that effectively neutralized their biggest offensive threat, and a groundout ends them the inning with nothing.
You could see it in their faces. They played like losing was a foregone conclusion for the entire rest of the game.
We're seeing a guy who may go down as the best postseason pitcher in our generation. Pretty crazy.
