I have been compiling numbers for BYU football from 1976 to the present
I'll probably share everything eventually, but one thing I found interesting is that based on the combined winning percentage of opponents, 1977 was the weakest schedule BYU faced during that period (39% winning record). The 2nd weakest schedule? 1984 (a 42% winning record).

Lavell's toughest schedule was 1991 (Ty's senior year). Combined opponent winning percentage was 59%. BYU went 8-3-2. Pretty respectable, given the strength of schedule. However, only two wins came against teams with winning records. Air Force was 10-3 that year and Utah was 7-5. 1982 was a strong schedule (54%) and BYU went 8-4 with 3 wins against teams with winning records (New Mexico 10-1, Hawaii 6-5, SDSU 7-5).

Crowton faced the third weakest schedule (tied with 1976) in 2001 with opponents having a combined winning record of 43%, and went 11-2. He also faced the third and fourth toughest schedules (opponents had a 59% and 58% combined winning records in 2003 and 2004) and had losing seasons those years. He also had a losing season against a relatively easy schedule in 2002.

Bronco's best year was going 11-2 against a combined winning record of 52%. Last season, he went 8-5 against a combined winning record of 54%, seventh toughest schedule (tied with 1982 (8-4), 1990 (10-3), 1995 (7-4), and 2010 (7-6)). But he also won 5 games against teams with records of 8-5 or better and won 6 games against teams with winning records, neither had ever been accomplished by a BYU coach.

His first year, where BYU went 6-6, the combined opponent winning record was 57%, so it was a pretty tough schedule.

The point? Other than Lavell's very good run from 1979 to 1984 (the glory years), BYU has been pretty much the same team. Pretty good against weak schedules. Decent against stronger schedules. Occasional great wins against good opponents, occasional head scratching losses to bad opponents. Some down years, some up years.
