IIRC, when the Northwestern team looked at the issue they
thought the entire benefits package could be taxed, which would push them past the standard deduction. And it was the cash payment that was the trigger, even if the school called the cash payment a cost of attendance payment. I'm genuinely interested to see what will happen. A lot of grey areas.
