I second Playa Del Carmen. Short flight from Houston. We really like the Secrets all-inclusive in PDC. Great food for an all-inclusive.

If you do opt for the PDC area, try the Ceiba del Mar hotel in Puerto Morelos.

You can easily get to Tulum for ruins from PDC, and also the cenotes.
