If you do opt for the PDC area, try the Ceiba del Mar hotel in Puerto Morelos.
Without kids, it's a winderful place to stay.
But take a look at Huatulco, which i mentioned before. One of Mexico's many hidden gems, undiscovered by Americans (although Canadians have found it), and not overrun with tourists.
