Interesting Q&A tonight.
Question:
"With the up and down season what lessons have you learned so far as a coach and team?"

Bronco:
"I've learned so much. I think that's one of the cool things about being a coach in such a visible setting is the different challenges that come with that. But what I've learned is just how important depth is. I mean developing a program that can sustain unique twists of the road along the way because every season is different. I've learned alot about making sure backup players are prepared. Thinking about practice structure even back to the spring to make sure there is enough repetition going around with in the 20 hour that we get to make sure that backups can be ready. And then trying to do some forward thinking of what if. So maybe a few more what ifs before the season with contingencies in place before we start the season."

Question:
"In the military you train your personnel to fill in 2 billets above their current level. So how do you identify talented coordinators and how do you train and develop them?"

Bronco:
"That's a really good question and I think it is something not only football specific but also organization specific. I think first you have to understand the criteria for the organization that you work with. At BYU primarily they're going to be LDS. So we look at young LDS players that are playing not only at BYU but elsewhere that have coaching aspirations. So I have a list that I keep of great LDS players, great young LDS coaches or graduate assistants across the country, great LDS interns across the country. And then during our camps in the summer I won't consider hiring anyone unless the come work our camp so it's almost like a try out. I can see them work up close and in person. When in doubt I take the one most prepared and if they've worked with me specifically or come up through our program and they've caught my eye then I work with that. And for the development part really as the head coach the role that I was played up to this point in the season, I was working as hard as I could to spend equal time with the offense and defense and keep developing coach Anae and coach Howell. And also other assistants on our staff to fill those roles eventually because nothing lasts in coaching forever. The more I'm involved in either offense or defense the less I have to do any of that. The more time I have only to call the plays or run one side of the ball. SO they're tradeoffs along the way. Sometimes short term overrides long term sometime long term overrides short term. Difficult but essential for sustainability.

Question:
"Did your role or presence with the defense become any different this week?"

Bronco:
"It is different this week. My number one objective is to help every coach on our team with the help they need but also help our players have success. What I asked coach Howell to do is take on a less experienced, with more injury, system of defense with one less coach and less experience. So do more with less is what I asked him. I'm anxious to help anyway that I can and I've been trying hard to do that."

Quesiton:
"How do you balance or reconcile criticism from the fans with an appreciation for their passion?"

Bronco:
"That's a great question. It is difficult sometimes. As I watched our last game, we got down two scores and I watched ... droves ... or rather some leave. And really frustrating. And then I looked at those cheering like crazy all the way to the end. And so I swing back and forth. Really what I try and focus on as much as I can is what I can control. And that's trying to run a program that means more than just football, that represents our church, that builds young men and that wins a ton of games. And hope that's appreciated. If it's not, I really don't control that and so I'm at peace with the best I can do each day. And those that support that I'm great with that. Those that don't it's completely their right. Being in the public eye like I am they have every right to criticize if they'd like. The greatest thing over the past 12 years is I don't acknowledge it. I didn't start like that but now I'm completely at peace with how hard I try and I'm not swayed very much. I lend alot more time to appreciate those who are with us than those who are against us is where I am today.
