At my employer, a masters degree starts you at a higher grade level and probably
$10k-15k higher salary. A phd gets you an even higher starting grade level and salary.

Your career is performance based after that, but I think its rare for undergrads with a BS to advance to the level that MS hires start at within the time it takes to get a masters degree.
