The amount needed is directly related to the number and size of the VMs you will
running at the same time. 8gm Ram is fine for your laptop and a couple of 1x1 linux servers, but if you want some Windows 2008/2012 it will most likley be just your laptop and 1 Windows VM. If you go with 8gb, just make sure you have extra slots to add additional later when RAM cost decreases.
