MONTY: Does this situation not fall at the feet of Bronco Mendenhall?
Kehl: It always does. It's the nature of the business. It always comes back to who's in charge. Bronco, bless his heart, he wants to be the traditional coach that is just the head coach, he has his offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. I don't think that that's the right answer, personally, I think he needs to just be the defensive coordinator. It is what it is. He's good at it, he does a good job, the defense responds to him, and they play better. So, I mean, that's a problem.
What I understand that to mean is that Bronco is an excellent defensive coordinator, but not cut out to be a head coach, and that the program would be better if coaching the defense is all Bronco did.
I can also definitely understand how others interpret this to mean Kehl believes Bronco should continue being the head coach, and also take on the defensive duties, but to me, his words and tone of voice indicated Bronco should be solely in charge of the defense, end of story.
