had a similar experience at Ricks when Gary Gardner was HC and they...
...were really stacked with talent. Their best player was Jeff "JJ" Anderson, a smooth 6'6" swingman who went on to play for Utah St when they were in the same conference with UNLV back in the mid 80's. Tryouts were a free for all and I thought I could make it. Likely was somewhere in the middle to above average in the pack and they kept only one guy who never caught on with the team. Coach said I was a natural 6'9" power forward stuck in a 6'4" body. I'm actually pretty fortunate to be as tall as I am, my Dad was only 5'8" and his Dad was even shorter.

I did have one scholarship coming out of high school to play at South Plains Jr College in Levelland, TX. That was the same school that Keena Young later came from. In hindsight I should've taken it. My stupid 18 yr old thinking was, "I don't know anyone in Texas. All my buddies are going to Ricks. If I can get a scholarship to South Plains I can certainly walk on and make the team at Ricks!"

yadayadayada...I failed to make the team and several student loans later...
