That said, using a HS coaching record as some type of predictor of success isn't very strong reasoning, considering all recent coaches at Ben Lomond have posted similarly bad records (maybe it's the school, not the coaches?). After all, Ty Detmer's HS coaching record is 15-20. It's hard to win at some schools, no matter how good a coach you are.
Prior to Howell taking over as DC, I'd heard nothing but good things about him. I think Bronco's original intent was to make him DC and train him as a protégé, while retaining the play calling responsibilities. His desire to get more involved with the offense and overall team activity may have led him to prematurely turn over those responsibilities to Howell. It sounds like he's fixing some of that mistake this week.
