Coaching Concerns
I have not posted in several months but thought I would add some perspective into the concerns about whether or not Bronco should stay or go. I have been following BYU football for many years. Bronco has a done a very good job of running a clean program and not having any bad years. He is probably the one of the top 10 defensive coaches in the country. However, it seems like being a head coach is difficult for him. One of the biggest question marks is his ability to evaluate coaching talent which was one of Lavell's strengths.

As an example, he lets Anae go and brings up Doman. That didn't work so he lets Doman go and brings back Anae. Jamie Hill was a train wreck so he gets released and then Bronco takes over the defense and it becomes one of the best in the country. Also, how many of Bronco's coaches have gone on to other, better coaching jobs? Lavell's pedigree is still coaching today, 13 years after he retired.

Another concern is Bronco's perceived lack of attention on in state games. How can you not get up for games against Utah and Utah State? Many on this board are citing the injury to Taysom as the reason for our problems. The loss of Taysom hurts but remember, BYU was down to Utah State 28 to 14 before Stewart even took the field. Utah State just came in and punched BYU in the mouth and we never recovered. We also had a bye week to prepare for them and but for some reason came out flat.

In game adjustments are difficult for BYU. BYU had leads in both the Central Florida and Nevada games but ended up losing them in the second half. That is coaching. The other teams made better adjustments at half time than BYU did. I understand about missing assignments but that gets back to coaching. If you are teaching correct assignments and the player is not executing as taught, than bring in someone else until the playerlearn. Other teams play young players and seem to do well especially against us.

Lastly, I think hard work, grit and determination are important in what we do. However, results are what counts. Many on this board treat Bronco's job as a church assignment or calling. While he doesn't make what some coaches make, I've seen it reported that he makes anywhere from $800,000 to $950,000. I'm sure that many on this board would agree that that is a decent salary that most Americans could only dream of. The reason we pay coaches that kind of money is due to the emphasis we place on the job.

So at the end of the day, Bronco is still the coach of the team we all love and support. However, as with any job, there needs to be an annual performance review to ensure that progress is being made and that the person is the right individual for the job. Tonight's game is very important. A 4 game losing streak could be detrimental to the program with recruits going elsewhere. Wins against UNLV, Middle Ten State are not enough to save this season.
