no compensation. Especially in the case of the stars. Kirk Herbstreit, for example, didn't get paid to play quarterback at Ohio State (above the table anyway). He had no NFL prospects. He did, however, end up getting a local broadcast gig in Columbus, which led to Gameday, and now he makes millions as a college football announcer/analyst. The guy was certainly well compensated for his decision to attend Ohio State University.
And he's just one example -- anyone who is a star in college will benefit professionally from connections and name recognition after their playing days are done. Really hard to argue that they're "exploited."
