80s? LaVell's staff became more like what Bronco has had during the 90s, a lot more insular, with new hires often coming from BYU roots. When LaVell was at his best, he had several coaches from outside of BYU and from outside the Mormon culture. I'm not trying to make excuses for Bronco, but I don't know if he could do that now and I don't know if any other coach could either. Gary tried and brought in a lot of non-BYU guys, but didn't have enough to maintain the culture. Whether we like it or not, the events of 2004 changed BYU football forever. The off-the-field actions meant that we needed both coaches and players who understood BYU, and so far that has meant a lot of insular hires.
