Post game last night, Bronco - a summary and some comments
1. Bronco called every defensive play, prepared the defense all week - too little, far out prepared by BSU
2. BSU played "at a much higher level from beginning to end."
3. BYU struggled in space and in tackling. There was missed tackle after missed tackle.
4. There was a "lack of execution on our end as well."
5. Being DC this week took Bronco away from other things he wants to do as HC. (Translated: Howell not doing his job hurt the team)
6. End of the first half, the INT right after the safety was Bronco's fault, because he wanted Anae to have the team take a knee and get into the half, but Bronco was too busy as DC with the defense to get word to Anae. (Translated: Anae isn't bright enough to figure that out on his own.)
7. Nick Howell "has been doing a really nice job" but Bronco decided to "dive in" and be more of a consultant.
8. Bronco doesn't know if he will be calling the defense going forward, just wants to give the team the best chance to win going forward
9. Half time adjustments on defense paid off in the third quarter, which resulted in some improvement
10. Jamal Williams played really hard, "tried his guts out" with lots of emotion. (Agreed: Williams has the kind of fire every other player should emulate.)
11. The team is preparing, is willing, but somehow the coaching staff needs to help them master assignments "at a much higher level."
12. Injuries are the reality - BYU coaching staff struggling in all areas to get players to understand/execute assignments.
13. Second quarter was "surreal" - BYU called the right defenses, but too many players failing to execute ("wrong guy, wrong spot, wrong leverage") - "With the time I had with the [defense] this week, there wasn't enough time for me to help them." (However, per above, Nick Howell has been doing a really good job.)
14. BYU issues: Injuries, shattered confidence in players and coaching staff. "There is a lot to do."
15. Fua was not close to 100%, but hopefully ready next week.
16. Goal: Each coach and player needs to rededicate themselves to do the best they can to give the team the very best chance to win. It is not about wins/losses, but getting BYU back to playing BYU football again.
17. Comparison to 2010. Much different symbolically and actually. Wanted team to see him this week "on a more grass roots level" and not just as a consultant. Getting back into it gave him an idea of more things that need to be accomplished. (Bronco indicates that he did not know how bad things were on the defense until he got back involved this week.)
18. Players are going to have to give much more effort. Young players in new roles are just not ready/executing yet.
19. Bronco has to do a better job, coaches need to up their game
20. Bronco tried as hard as he could this week, and fell short.
