Bronco's MO through the first 5 or so years was that he lost to the good teams but beat the bad teams. But the second leg of his tenure BYU has started to lose to the bad teams with only a 4-5 real quality wins for the program. Players have obviously quit. Which is unfortunate. Donors are growing more disenchanted as time goes on. The P5 window is closing while BYU continues at this level of play. Scheduling is tough and getting tougher. BYU is currently a G5 program. This recruiting year most likely takes a step back.
Bronco is a good guy. He has a good heart. He wants to help the players become the best men they can be which is admirable.
Unfortunately Bronco seems unwilling to either try different things in order to get better and/or put in more of the hours that is typical of Div 1 head coaches. Notice TNT didn't say Bronco isn't intense. He is. But simply you can't put in 1/3 less hours than other coaches who have extremely high pressure jobs and expect to come out ahead most of the time when their livelihood is on the line.
If BYU is unwilling to replace Bronco because he is the football coach of one of the school's most visible missionary efforts, and the firesides and such make up for so-so seasons against less than stellar opponents, it may be time for TNT to become a lot less vested. It's just too hard to want to win in this era of super competition and expect to compete with these other programs. BYU may not be willing to do what's needed to be at the P5 level. A decision will have to be made soon on where this program is going. TNT would guess it's headed to the G5 level and that's very sad.
