Is Bronco's worst fail his pick of asst. coaches? How many have been hired away?
My biggest beef with Bronco is his selection of assistant coaches. Other than Grimes, have any of his assistants been hired away to better jobs? Maybe Anae?

As the defensive coordinator, Bronco has fielded some pretty good defenses with only one or two legit NFL talents. When he's focused on a position group, that group has performed markedly better. He's definitely been out-coached at times. That leads me to conclude that he's a better than average (but not elite) DC and position coach. His problem is that he hasn't hired good help.

I think these lackluster assistants have failed on several fronts, but the two most conspicuous to me are talent identification and talent development. The coaches have missed on many LDS guys (several who had BYU at the top of their list) who are now in the NFL or who went on to all conference careers at other schools. They have also gone after many guys who have fizzled.

The underwhelming performances by highly touted recruits may simply be misevaluated talent, but in other cases gifted recruits arrive on campus, have an promising first season and then fail to progress. To me that says coaches are failing to develop them properly.

For me, this comes back to Bronco. I can't say whether he's passing up more qualified candidates for guys who share his world view, but that doesn't matter. Whatever his reason for choosing his assistants, his choices have been mediocre as best. The evidence of that is seen in he on-field performance of their charges and the lack of interest in from other schools in hiring them away to better jobs.

I know the LDS factor limits his choices, and I know that teams like Boise have done quite well hiring former players, but I've got to think BYU can do better than what they have.
