Just making sure everyone sees Porter Gustin's dad post on Cougarboard today
this is what he had to say....
"Time to clear the air. This is Porter's fathers and my first ever post on the cougar board (contrary to popular belief) so please bare with me. First, I would like to thank those who have been fair and supportive to our family through this rigorous recruiting process and past allegations. It is hard to imagine the stress and pressure placed on this 17 year old young man over the previous 15 months. It has taken a heavy toll. For those who have judged him harshly and quickly without even knowing him I am a bit disappointed (especially based on our common religious backgrounds and teachings) but i also understand that we are all "free to choose".
With the exception of 1280 The Zone contacting me to speak on their program (twice) about the recruiting process we have tried to stay out of the media. You will notice I do not utilize social media as I have no Facebook, Twitter or Instagram accounts. However, I have been, his father and coach for the last 17 years and know him very well. We discuss recruiting and other issues on a daily basis. With that said, here is the deal.
It is true, BYU was initially his first choice. BYU initiated a meeting with us requesting our presence (Porter, Coach Higginson, my wife and I) on December 13th. We all discussed the situation prior to the meeting and were prepared to receive and accept an offer IF one was extended. Bronco poked his head in while we sat in Coach Tidwell's office and spoke to us about the program for a few brief minutes. Coach Tidwell then indicated that there was one scholarship available and that they wanted to "get to know us better" over the next several months. Three months later in March Geoff Martzen contacted me about the Junior Day dates being changed to June. During that email discussion he also mentioned that not only were there no scholarships now available but that they were "over their allotment" of offers on both inside and outside linebackers. At that time we decided to move on. Why wait around? Im not sure what the BYU "procedure and protocol" would be at that point that Geoff was talking about. Hope for an opportunity to walk on? No thanks. Anyhow, we hold no animosity toward BYU and their recruiting decisions and completely understand how this process works as both my wife and I played DI athletics. It just didn't work out. We were perfectly fine with what Geoff told us and fortunately have several other wonderful opportunities to pursue. Therefore, I will repeat what I said on 1280.......that ship has sailed and we do not expect nor hope for an offer at this point! Porter is not "pi--ed off" that he did not get an offer and has long since moved on. Personally, I see it as divine intervention and fate. His destiny leads him down a different path.
Second, for those that want to continue to discuss his character here is some additional information to ponder. All allegations and charges were dropped pertaining to Porter and a hazing incident. His slate is 100% clean with nothing on his record. I repeat.... nothing. Apparently it is very difficult to build a case when everything came in anonymously through a "parent" claiming to be a member of the Nebo School District. As suspected, that "parent" never materialized and when it came time for us to finally have our day in court...not one individual could be located to substantiate any claims or allegations against Porter so the case was dropped.
Here is what happened in a nut shell in order to put the rumors to rest. Through the proper channels I have obtained all the witness statements and currently have them in my possession. One evening Porter was challenged by his roommate to a wrestling match while he was resting on his bed after practice in the hotel room. This was a common event among players during football camp. During the wrestling match another player came out of the shower and asked for a towel. Nobody would get up to go get him one so he unwisely decided to chase them around as though he was going to dry himself off on them. He spotted Porter and the other kid wrestling nearby and ran over by them. He briefly jumped around in front of them both and then moved on to chasing the others around. The whole incident lasted less than a couple of minutes and no physical contact was made by anybody. in fact, Porter was just as much a "victim" in this event as anyone else but because he was "bigger" than the player that challenged him to a wrestling match and had him pinned down when the other player ran over, he was accused of participating in this spontaneous "hazing". KSL jumped on this story once they received an anonymous text from the same allusive "parent" from the district and ran down to Salem with no questions asked. You would think they would at least try to obtain a police report (which was also non existent) or gather a few additional facts. With pressure now mounting for justice to be served to the new kid from Idaho and with KSL leading the evening news with the story the principle decided to suspend both students in an effort to appease the community. Rumors of rape, assault, abuse and other atrocities now ran rampant through the small Town and stretched back up in to Idaho. Once the district had a chance to review the information a week later Porter was quickly reinstated. However, the damage was done and his life will be changed forever. This cougar board is just one example as it continues to bring this incident up more than a year later. So there you have the facts. Say what you want about me as his father but lets not continue to drag him through the mud. He has been through enough already.
In conclusion, we do wish BYU all the success in future and hope their program excels. Except, of course, when they play either Wyoming or Boise State."
