I was working for LDS Foundation (now Philanthropies) who got the financing for it while they were building it. The only concern was that the financing actually fell through at one point and there was a few tense moments until they could get it figured out again. But it wasn't a big deal. The church still puts a ton of resources toward it, I think you overstate it big time.
