I'm shocked how many people keep using recruiting as an excuse... As in, "BYU is so limited it's not their fault, it's the situation." I'm so sick of hearing this load of bull. Here's a little tid bit to show you that all it took was some new guys to show Bronco how it's done, to shut this excuse up that BYU is so limited. This current team isn't limited because BYU can't recruit. It's because Bronco can't recruit. And don't even dare give Bronco credit for last class going forward. That's all Martzen and what the assistants are now doing. Even Bronco admitted he's opened things up and didn't before. Now if Bronco and co could actually coach and win when they should, even MORE would come.
2014 recruiting:
At least 54 offers from P5 schools:
37 offers from 12 different PAC12 schools.
5 from 3 Big 12
5 from 3 Big 10
4 from 4 SEC
3 from 2 ACC
Plus a ton of other decent non P5 offers. Keep in mind, we only had 19 commits. Pretty small class.
2013 class: 27 Commits!
Roughly 16 offers from 11 P5 schools: Keep in mind, 10 of these went to Kearsley. Only 6 other P5 offers to the rest of the class. A ton of guys only had one offer... BYU.
12 from 7 PAC schools
2 from 2 Big 12
2 from 2 SEC
2012 class: 17 commits, and I'm not including Taysom Hill.
Let's make this easy...
TROY HINDS- 14 P5 offers, 9 PAC 12, 2 Big 10, 1 Big 12, 1 ACC, and ND.... Consider ND P5.
Then 9 from 5 PAC 12
2 from 2 Big 10
1 Big 12
1 SEC
So 27 offers from P5 schools but more than half are to Troy Hinds himself.
I won't even go back any further.
One more thing to remember for the "Well the class rankings aren't good so 2014 didn't improve."... Notice the number of commits. I know it's been posted a hundred times but it appears it needs to be posted more. We got guys from more locations and with more national attention than we have in years, and blew the last few years out of the water in that area despite only having 19 commits. 19 compared to say 25 can kill your ranking by 10-25 spots.
Give us even 6 more recruits, say four 3* and two 2*, at a guess average of #75 recruit at each position, that moves our class ranking up to the mid 40's. Imagine what a class of 25 every year would be like with our new efforts. Don't just look at a number and come to CB with an "argument." Years past have been hurt by total commits as well, like 2011, and 2012, but they weren't great quality top to bottom anyway.
This was mainly because I was bored, but also to help straighten out this laziness of just looking at class rankings ignorantly, and also for this lame excuse going around the board saying BYU is limited because we are such a unique school. 2014 shut that down and showed that effort and willingness was required. Bronco and his crew got lazy for a few years and that's what makes up our team now.
Our classes also point to the truth of what Jake Kuresa said about our depth... BYU hasn't been recruiting the lower end well. You've got your top few guys but then they got lazy with who they offered in the bottom 2/3 or so of recruiting. That is why our depth hurts. If we have to get to 3rd string at one position, 2nd at some, it sucks because our recruiting those years blew it. I don't think it's any coincidence that 5 of our 11 better 2nd team guys are brand new.
Anyway, recruiting IS improving. All they had to do was try harder. Any of you who believe the garbage idea that nobody is interested in the HC, or playing with a bunch of white guys, etc. you need to open your eyes. There are plenty of great athletes out there who would come to BYU if we would just reach out... Now we are. Pretty plain and simple to look at who we've been going after since 2014, and into the future, and see that Martzen and others have stepped the game up... Bronco admitted it.
They're also judging talent better and earlier... We're offering guys way before they're popular... CB complains because they aren't popular enough... Months later these dudes go from nothing or 2 star, to 3 and 4 star with loads of offers.
