Constructive criticism for Bronco, a letter to Bronco:
I might have been critical in my analysis of Bronco, but now that I have had time to consider everything, I would like to give some constructive criticism in the form of a letter, that might give Bronco some much needed relief.

Dear Bronco

I would like to help you gain control of your football team and your job. Both are in jeopardy at the moment, and unless you course correct, they may be gone forever. Here are a few suggestions that I feel will help get you back on the right track.

1. Make Football your #1 priority during the football season: All of us have seasons in our life. My busiest time of year is the summer, when my family knows they won't see me much, the bishop knows he won't see me much, and I probably eat out on Sundays, and swear more than any drunken sailor when things don't go according to plan. Bronco, you need to make football season your complete LIFE during the football season. No more talk about #5 on Priorities list. To a 19-25 year old kid, Confusing statements like this make them think that unacceptable things, are acceptable, if done for the right reasons. That is not a pattern for success! In this department, if they don't give 100%, it won't matter how close to 100% they get, because it won't be enough to be successful in a sport as competitive as football.

2. Stop OVER respecting the honor code: Yes it is important, but these kids will make mistakes, and its OK to sweep a few youthful mistakes under the rug for the good of the team. We completely screwed up our 2013 campaign for a kid who went to a strip bar. I guarantee that 95% of all other college football players have been to strip bars. Also, for reference sake, its the same thing that 100% of college football athletes, (including those at BYU) have seen on their laptops, or iPhones at least once in their existence. Have a talk with the kid, have him repent, make him run laps, and get him IN the football game. Just because the 90 year old grandma is grievously offended by his actions, doesn't mean we have to throw away an entire season, over correcting from it. The 90 year old grandma is also offense at the way the neighbor parked his car too close to her curb, and will be offended at something else tomorrow. Its OK that some people are offended sometimes.

3. Hire a PR coach, director, or professional of some kind to better enable you to speak to the fan base in a coherent, non demeaning way. I realize that this will require some pride swallowing on your part, but to get full commitment from those who would love to support you and the program, you HAVE to be aware of how tone deaf some of your statements are. You can't be successful with 250,000 of your biggest supporters in awe of your stupid comments.

4. LEAD: lots of leaders go through a phase where they finally learn to delegate responsibility, and try to assign tasks to others who are in positions of authority. While you can delegate many of the functions, and responsibilities of a football team, you have to be the heart, the passion, the Focus, the Carisma, the Reason, and the Leader of the team. I feel like you are stuck in delegating everything to others, and have forgotten to do the part of your job that is the ABSOLUTE MOST important piece of success. When kids are lost, like Jake Heaps, and he needs to be brought back into the fold, don't wait for the next best leader, Riley Nelson, to surpass him. Go help that kid become the leader he needs to become, because leaders inspire leadership in others! JUST LEAD BRONCO!!!

5. Show some emotion! I realize that you are trying to tie the past traditions of success of BYU to your future, and I know that part of that was a very stoic Head coach who was very successful, in Lavell Edwards, But, Times have changed. Lavell had to build his legend before he could be the emotionless, unmoved by joy or grief coach he ended up as. Show us the type of emotion that shows people the level of energy and passion that you have for the program. Let the players see how devoted you are to winning, so that they have no doubt what they are playing for

In closing Bronco, you are losing the fan base. Gary Crowton and Roger Reid lost the fan base before being fired, and when attendance is down, the ink turns red, and with enough red ink, no one will stick up for you in closed door meetings when your future is being talked about.

If you want to be successful in life, in this job, you have to want to win so bad that it defines who you are, and if you aren't ready to want it that bad, you haven't earned success!
