It is painfully obvious that the Lord does not reward people for their
righteousness on the sports field. Good people sometimes win, and sometimes lose. Bad humans oftentimes are the best at what they do. (I'm not talking about the Giants)
People either have the ability to make their own success, or they don't. Possitive attitude goes along way to creating success. It's like being "in the zone" where everything seems to work out right, or being in a funk where nothing works. The universe somehow rewards people depending on their own attitudes. I'm not sure how that works but I am sure that God does not influence sporting events.
Most people would agree that the BYU football team has some very good people on the team and coaching staff. Probably a higher percentage of "righteous" men than on any other team. People who strive to live as Jesus would have them do. But no, bad things have plagued this team for several years now. Jeremy Guthrie is a very good man by anybody's standards, yet he lost the World Series Game 7.
