At St. Maarten, work your way to Airport Beach, especially if you have kids. We didn't make it to that side due to other circumstances, but all recommendations were that it is awesome.

St. Thomas is more of a shopping destination with some cool historic stuff. Check out Blackbeard's castle and take the tour and check out the small museum. Pretty fascinating.
