people to stay with us when they needed somewhere to get back on their feet. Once she met a lady at my brother's little league baseball game who told her a sob story about how she and her 4 young kids were losing their house and had nowhere to go, but to her abusive mother's house. My mom offered to let the entire family stay with us instead for what initially was going to be a few days but turned into 2 or 3 agonizing months (it turned out that the lady was very manipulative herself).

One of her first nights with us, she told us that her crazy mother would be jealous that they weren't staying with her, and once she found out, might confront my mom. My mom told her that she could handle her, but at the same time warned the kids to be on the lookout for her.

A few nights later, my little brother was in his bed after midnight, in his room which was the closest to the front door. He heard somebody enter the room and opened an eye to see who it was - it was this freaky, 70-ish woman who came into our house and was snooping around. She approached him while he was in his bed and leaned down closely near his face, then slowly backed away out of his room, then presumably walked out the front door. Nobody else saw or heard anything.

My brother was freaked out - can you imagine being a little kid and seeing some creepy old woman who you had been warned about, sneaking into your bedroom? - but nobody really believed him or did anything about it.

As a postscript, the mother who stayed with us and her crazy mother are both long dead, and they were buried right next to our family plot in this same town, so we are reminded of them every time we go visit.
