How close did we get with the BIG 12?

I know what TH has to say on this, but he has to play these things close to the vest. So what is the reality? Did we overplay our hand with the BIG 12? Did we get cold feet when the conference looked weak? Did it never even get to the point of serious consideration? Does anyone really know what happened?
