Most universities couldn't afford to "professionalize" sports
Think of all the small schools (Alcorn St) and even some of the bigger ones that don't have the fan support or a good enough sports program to generate enough cash to pay for them (New Mexico St.).
I can see a day when the P5 simply make their own league of semi-professionals then the rest remain as they are today.
