Really? Tithing to pay for football? Seriously?
I'm a lifelong, diehard fan, but if football (and its boosters) can't pay for itself, and for its own upgrades, then that's a much clearer indication of program failure than losing four games in a row, or even all the rest of the games this season and next.
It'd be more reasonable to suggest say something like the Church shouldn't limit coaching salaries, and let BYU pay them however much the boosters are willing to pony up.
Regarding the "billions spent on a shopping center," if the brethren felt that they needed to do something to revitalize the area downtown and around Temple Square to ensure it remained a place where people could visit and leave with positive impressions of the Church, I'm not going to gainsay. I've spent enough time in that area over the past thirty years I can't help but agree, even though I'm not exactly in the target market for the city center shopping center. There are plenty of nasty downtowns across America. I'm glad Temple Square won't ever be sitting in the middle of one of them.
