He was a position coach before then.

His name comes up absolutely no where outside of CB for head coaching duties at this time. It doesn't mean he couldn't be a good one if he got the chance but right now he is not a hot commodity like people around here are imagining.
Especially considering the considerable drop off Stanford has had this year.
Derek Mason was the defensive coordinator of all those great things the OP listed...he was hired away to be the HC at Vanderbilt because of that great success the OP talked about...

When the team goes from this:
2010 = 12-1
2011 = 11-2
2012 = 12-2
2013 = 11-3
to
2014 = 5-4 (so far)
With the likelihood of 1-2 more losses (including bowl) and the rest of the coaching staff (HC, etc) seemed to stay pretty much the same it is doubtful praise and opportunity goes to the first year DC...
He seems like a great guy and could possibly enjoy working withing the culture of BYU and we may like him a lot and he may blossom into a great DC or HC some day but to pretend that the accomplishments of others are his and that he is an enormous name we need to scoop up now is kind of silly...
