So, at what point is it Bronco's fault BYU is not excelling?
I ask this is all honesty. I am not trolling, just wondering when the those 100% behind Bronco will start to question him instead of either giving excuses for injuries, coaching, recruits, the Honor Code, or whatever else?

Since most of the issues people complain about really started post-Max Hall in 2010, let's start there. By doing this I do not mean to discredit the years 2006-2009, which were exceptional, but to highlight how far BYU has fallen from those years to now. because to me, that is the fair critique.

I also want to point out that we are not ripping on Bronco Mendenhall the man. We are evaluating job performance history. This is not personal, it is like a business evaluation.

2010 season the staff was Bronco, DC was Hill, OC was Anae. We had a QB battle between Riley Nelson and true freshman Jake Heaps. Lark was somewhere. The year started ok with a win at home vs. UW, then nosedived from there, including some ugly losses to average to bad teams. Was so bad that Bronco fired his DC the day after the USU game, then let Anae leave after the year. And a bad loss to Utah last game of the year in which they had the lead for 85% of the game. Started an awful run against Utah.

2011 Bronco was HC/DC and Doman was the new OC. He brought in a new WR coach and a new RB coach as well. BYU ran a new offense, it failed, so they switched mid year and dumped Heaps for Nelson. The D payed better, but the O was still a mess. Then the offseason hit and all teh sloppy Oline guys decided to get serious about fitness and started posting about their weight loss and strength improvements with teh help of trainers in getting ready for Pro Day. People wondered why it took Pro Day for guys to want to get ready to plat at peak levels.

2012 season BYU made huge offseason changes to Strength, Conditioning and Nutrition. Improvements were made in all those areas. Linemen slimmed down to run a more uptempo scheme. Nelson was the clear starter as Heaps bailed to Kansas. Doman went to Oregon to study their O had was going to revise the BYU O to be more like it. BYU brought in outsiders to evaluate the S&C&N plan, revised it, and BYU focused more fully on the nutrition side. Remember all the tweets from players showing what they were going to eat now and those changes? Now, players had what they seemed to need to perform at peak levels if they used it. No more excuses.

The D was awesome in 2012. Perhaps the best it has ever had with Ziggy and KVN on the ends. But the O was a clusterbomb of awful. 7-6 loss at BSU. Lost a winnable game at ND. Lost to Utah again in an emotional, ugly way. In spite of an epic defense, this team found ways to lose games.

2013 brought major changes again. Doman was gone. As were Weber, DuPaix and Cahoon. Brought back Anae. Brought in Tujague, Holliday and Atuaia, which seem to have been all solid hires even now. Changes the O for the 3rd time since 2010. From Spread, to pro style, to Riley O scheme, and now to the uptempo GFGH to better fit Taysom. We recruited a ton of JC Oline players, or which only Weslety now plays, Fusi a little. Brought in Trammel who never plays and last minute Rob Daniel who does play. So went after JC guys to fill gaps, which were massive due to some poor player evals and recruiting efforts previously. Only brought in Geoff Martzen to help with recruiting efforts. This was a great hire and has helped because you can see the young guys we have are good, but also exposes the huge recruiting holes in classes from 2008-2012. Ipads given to players to watch game film on week to week.

2014. Bronco turns D over to Howell, a coach with zero other college coaching experience except at BYU. Only D coordinator in the nation with that type of resume lacking in other experience. Brought in some solid guys in Leslie, Jackson, Nelson and Blackmon. The O relies heavily on Taysom Hill, who shoulders the load tremendously well early in the year. But after he goes out, the holes on this team got exposed. The D looks horrific, worst since 2005. Tough loss at home to USU, followed by meltdown losses to UCF and Nevada, followed by a horrific loss to Boise State in a game where they let up in the 3rd quarter. The D looks awful, the O struggles to recalibrate post-Taysom. There are clear issues. Injuries are a factor, but coaching has not gotten some guys ready to play either.

Which brings us to now. So let's recap.

Since 2010, Bronco has changed his OC 2x. He has changed WR coach 2x. HE has changed RB coach 2x. He has changed Oline coach. He has changed DC 2x. No other D staff changes were made however. Just the DC. We have also added a recruiting coordinator who forced Bronco to make changes to his recruiting model to not offer unless they are seen personally, made huge changes to the Strength, Conditioning and Nutrition program. Also added another outdoor practice field with field turf to allow guys to get ready for turf games. BYU added other people in the AD to assist with the football program to better free up Bronco's time. BYU added resources to his program to better help him do his job.

So please tell me, with all of these changes and improvements, at what point is Bronco himself the one responsible for the mediocre product on the field? The culture is his, the expectation level for players to work and prepare year round is set by him, the goals are his. It is his program, he has been given the help and freedom to make it his.

When?
