3 years ago OK State had and SOS of 3 and Bamas was in the high teens with the same 12-1 record that Ok State had. Yet we were treated to Bama and LSU a scant 3-4 weeks after they had already played. And somehow we are expected to believe that Bama was deserving of the NC. They weren't even deserving to be in that game. Last year Bama had an SOS of 39. These rankings are on top of the bias already built into every ranking system because there are not enough data points to get an actual valid ranking.

Everyone assumes that the SEC is all that but aTm was a middle of the road team in the B12 yet challenged for the SEC crown their first season there. Even Missouri made some noise.

Of course "lousy" is relative, but it's still not a valid measure with only 12 games on the season. The only fair way to do it is to expand the playoff and have conference champs each get a spot. Just like the NCAA tournament.
