Roger Reid 2.0
This will be a polarizing post, but the thought that came to me on Saturday was worse than Pitt's Groundhog's Day analogy...Bronco is pulling a Roger Reid.

I'm not comparing their personalities, media comments, or character. I'm comparing their style of play and the fans response to it. Reid was a successful basketball coach at BYU. He won nearly 70% of his games and had some post season success. He also had some exciting games with wins over big opponents.

But he coached a boring brand of basketball and fan attendance dropped every season largely because of it. It took years to bring it back and the Marriott Center didn't fill again consistently until Rose's uptempo and Jimmermania hit us. There are a lot of factors that drive attendance, but I actually think the biggest issue right now is Bronco's product. It's predictable and it's boring.

Even when Taysom was doing his thing, you could see that the offense was waiting for him to do something, create something. The fans were waiting too. He could run, but we lacked a vertical game and BYU's offense was becoming progressively more predictable. Yes, we beat Virginia, but if you look at the stats again, you'll noticed that they ran 42 more plays, out gained us (in both rushing and passing), and kept the ball more than twice as long. So even though a pre-injured Taysom was Superman and worthy of weekly SportsCenter Top10 plays, the overall offense was painfully predictable and boring to watch. Combine this style of play with several other factors and you have a disaster.

When you're winning, the style of play isn't an issue, but when you're losing the game experience isn't as good. It's not the "can't miss event" that it once was. When you're winning it doesn't matter if you're in a conference or what your schedule is, and it doesn't matter if you're coach/players says stupid things. But when you're losing, all of these other factors are magnified.

We are like the frog placed in a pot of lukewarm water, failing to recognize that the water's getting hotter before it's too late to escape. The water's close to a boil, and many fans are loving the heat, while others jumped out much sooner, seeing what now seems inevitable. I think Tom Holmoe knows, but he became more committed as soon as Bronco signed his extension last year, and he's hoping like a lot of other frogs that Bronco can right this ship - unfortunately for us, Bronco's the chef.

Hopefully, change can happen soon, otherwise I think we are in for a slow recovery.

Still Loyal, Strong, & True. Just very worried.
